Work Smock - Osnaburg

$98.00

Also known as "Waggoner Frocks," Work Smocks were often worn by the 18th century working class as an outer garment to protect clothing from being soiled.  These articles are well documented by Moreland and Diderot, as well as in period art. Oversized, roomy, and long. 10" longer than our workshirts with 14"" side slits for improved mobility. Also available in natural linen. This also makes an excellent night shirt. Available in sizes XS to 4XL.

This Item is usually in stock.

Makes a great rifle shirt

I bought this to make a pull over rifle shirt. I cut about 12 inches off the bottom and added a cape made from osnaburg fabric I ordered from Townsends. The fit and finish of the smock were excellent, as usual for clothing items from Townsends.

A great gardening smock

Just a great work smock all around. I don't even use it as a period piece. I use it as a functional work garment for working in the garden. I have no idea why the textile industry stock making them. Did we stop gardening? If not, then they might still serve a useful function in the 21st century.

Excellent product, excellent customer service

When I ordered I asked for a 3X, since in my experiences with ordering period clothing if I wanted roomy garments that's what I would need. I was contacted to say that 3X was not in stock, and was told a 2X should fit based on my measurements. and I could return it if needed.
I was VERY pleased when my order arrived two days after the above email exchange and that both this work smock and work shirt fit me exactly as I had hoped they would.
A huge thank you to all the folks at Townsend's including those who made the shirt & smock and especially the very nice lady in Customer Care who not only contacted me but exchanged emails until I was satisfied with what I was about to order.
Trust the professionals, folks, and especially the pros here at Townsend's!

Comfort clothing

I have two. One to use as outer ware, smock. One as a shirt/night shirt very comfortable and durable. I wear mine for 18th century but also at home. After each back operation they were all I wanted to wear for weeks. Comfort clothes.

Oustanding Quality!

OUTSTANDING quality! Great fabric , stitching, pewter buttons, sizing right on the money as far as collar and wrist. Could be be a bit looser for the big guys but that's our fault. Still ample room with two layers of undergarments to have a pull over work shirt. Example: XL is ample for 18" neck and 33" sleeve and 50" chest/belly with clothes on underneath to boot = not super loose but ample. I can't even conceive of a 4XL option if the XL works for me. Might be tempted to go to XXL, but again, XL is ample based on the above measurements.
