Toddy Rod

  • Period Drink Warmer
  • Wrought Iron
  • Made in the USA

Toddy Rods (also known as Flip Dogs) were a popular way to heat drinks and add some table-side flair in the 18th and early 19th centuries. These particular Toddy Rods are handmade from wrought iron in Tennessee by a master blacksmith. Because they are all handmade the sizes vary, but a good approximation is 11-13" long.

Great for utility! Poor craftsmanship.

This is a great rod for heating up hot drinks-- it's a hunk of iron that does the job. Made by a "master blacksmith" must be hyperbole, however; the tip of my toddy-rod was haphazardly welded on at a jaunty angle, on a corner, and while the entire rod lies flat on one side, on the other, only the tip lies flat while the handle is 2mm in the air. The whole piece looks like it was made by an uncertain apprentice, with no two angles that match and superfluous hammer-marks all over the place.

BUT. It certainly does the job, it has character, and is a welcome addition to my camp. I just expected more from
"[...] handmade from wrought iron [...] by a master blacksmith."
